The Tripura are one of the
ancient ethnic indigenous groups living in the sub-continent. The main segment
of their community lives in the Indian state of Tripura while over a hundred of
them are settled in greater Chittagong Hill Tract area. Besides about a fifty
thousand Tripuras are scattered in Chittagong.
Noakhali, greater Comilla, Sylhet, Faridpur and Dhaka.
The Tripuras are of Mongoloid origin. Historians say that their ancestors came
to India from Mongolia by crossing Tibet
and Siberia of central Asia five thousand
years ago. They speak Cork-Bork and their family structure is patriarchal.
Though they follow sanaton-dharma or the eternal religion, they only worship 14
Vedic gods and goddesses.
